Unlike most nasi kukus with ayam goreng berempah stalls in Klang Valley that only operate during certain hours, Ilham Nasi Kukus‘ is available for most of the day. That makes Ilham the go-to place for this specialty food without having to guess whether they are open.
There’s no menu here because they serve only 1 dish. All you need to do is queue up at the stall, then let the staff know where you want it with sambal or not. Everything else like ikan bilis, curries and pineapple acar is essential to keep the experience authentic and complete, so I wouldn’t recommend skipping any of it.
On the way to your table, feel free to grab a packet of fish crackers to go with your meal. Then get a drink, because it’s gonna be a spicy ride.
Based on my few visits here, I find there’s a consistency issue with their pineapple acar. Sometimes the fruit is ripe, juicy and tastes sweet. Sometimes it’s slightly unripe and feels dry. Whether it’s good or not it depends on your preference, but I like it sweet so it could balance out the spiciness.
As for the steamed rice, it has always been pretty much the same, lumpy and not as fluffy as you’d expect. So the ayam goreng berempah marinated with their secret herbs is the star and the main reason to eat at Ilham.
The fried chicken is always hot and moist since it’s freshly fried in batches. The aroma of spices fills the restaurant and never fails to get our mouth watering and we usually take away some to enjoy later.
For the same price (RM6) you could probably get a better nasi kukus ayam berempah at Al Baraq. That is, if you don’t mind traveling the extra distance for it.
