Hameediyah Bistro (Penang Nasi Kandar) @ Ampang

Hameediyah opened their first bistro concept restaurant in Ampang about 3 months ago. What makes it different from the other Hameediyah restaurants is that you will find a wider range of food and drinks here such as Western food (coming soon), barista coffee and smoothies.

But just to set the expectation straight, you should also know that this is a franchise outlet, so it’s not managed by the original Hameediyah restaurant in Penang.

That said, you can still expect many of their signature curry dishes here like Ayam Bawang, Kari Ayam Kapitan, Kambing Mysore, Kari Sotong and many more. All of the dishes for nasi kandar are cooked from scratch fresh daily by a team of seasoned chefs at the restaurant, not delivered from a central kitchen.

Hameediyah-Fish-Head-Curry

Currently, they are having a limited time promotion for their fish head curry which is priced at only RM45 compared to the usual RM60 and more. This is a good deal considering most Chinese restaurants charge more or less the same price but for half the portion you get at Hameediyah.
To order the fish head curry (they use red snapper), pick one of them from the display counter which will then be cooked and served in a clay pot. The portion size is large enough to be shared by at least 2 people, possibly among 3 or more. I have to say the price is worth it and you should definitely try it while the promotion lasts.

Hameediyah-Nasi-Kandar-Sotong

As for the nasi kandar, they are not exactly cheap (as expected in a nasi kandar restaurant) but at least they are affordable. The price for every dish is clearly displayed in the menu so you won’t have a price shock later. The sotong kari + cabbage combo was RM13.50, which was alright considering the size of the squid.

Hameediyah-Fried-Chicken-Nasi-Kandar

Fried chicken (quarter portion) + cabbage = RM10.50.

Hameediyah-Fish-Curry-Nasi-Kandar

Fish curry + double portion bendi = RM10.

Hameediyah-Nasi-Kandar-Mutton

Kari Kambing Mysore + double portion bendi + telur dadar = RM17.50. It might seem pricey but at least they are not stingy with the portion of the mutton.

Cappuccino-and-Teh-Tarik

The Cappuccino @ RM7 was good, it tasted exactly like what you would get at the cafes.

Cendol Kampung Hulu – Cendol Bingsu by the Melaka River

Melaka has no shortage of stalls or cafes that serve cendol. But if you are looking for one that offers the best overall experience, it has got to be Cendol Kampung Hulu. This unique cendol operation can be found behind a barber shop-cum-restaurant establishment along the Melaka River.

Here, customers are able to have their cendol while enjoying the view in an al fresco setting. It’s pretty cool to be honest.

Another thing that makes Cendol Kampung Hulu stand out from the common cendol stalls is the quality of their shaved ice. They have invested in a Korean ice shaver machine which produces a fluffy and snow like texture for their shaved ice. Because of that, it’s also called Cendol Bingsu.

Cendol Kampung Hulu also uses a couple homemade ingredients such as frozen coconut milk (for the Bingsu) and coconut ice cream. And besides the usual toppings you get in a cendol, they also offer a variety of fruit add ons, albeit some of them are canned. The selection include mango, dragon fruit, pineapple, longan and even durian.

A standard serving (with ice cream) is RM5 and you can opt for as many additional fruit toppings you want. Every scoop is chargeable at RM1. For example, the cendol above will cost RM7 because of additional mango cubes and longan.

All in all, the cendol was enjoyable mainly because of the Bingsu texture. We also feel that the price is reasonable considering the large portion size (1 bowl can actually be shared by two) and the prettier-than-usual presentation. The Melaka River view was only the cherry on the top.

Kancil Raja Patin @ Kampung Bangau, Temerloh

Temerloh has a lot of patin tempoyak stalls and restaurants, they can be found every corner of the town. Gobang Maju is inarguably the most famous of all.

But if you want to try one that has less tourists and also slightly cheaper in price, check out Kancil Raja Patin.

Temerloh-Pahang-River-View

Kancil Raja Patin (KRP) is situated next to Sungai Pahang so diners can enjoy the peaceful view of the river while eating. You can also see plenty of fish cages lined up along the river used to rear patin fish – silver catfish.

Ikan-Patin-Sangkar-Temerloh

This is why the patin fish here tastes better and sweeter because the water is always flowing compared to those farm raised in ponds.

Like all good patin tempoyak restaurants, KRP also makes their own tempoyak paste from durian kampung flesh. It contains 13 different spices that contribute to its exquisite flavor.

To be honest, I have never been a fan of tempoyak. But after trying this at Temerloh, I can safely say that I am now a convert. But between gulai patin tempoyak and patin ikan pais, personally I prefer the latter because the flavor is more ‘kao’.

While you are here, these are some of the dishes to try:

– Patin Ikan Pais (must try)
– Patin Penyet (deep fried patin served with sambal penyet, they don’t smash the fish)
– Fried Chicken & Udang Galah

Pak Tam Mee Udang @ Teluk Kumbar, Penang

During my trip back to Penang for CNY celebrations last week, we went for a Mee Udang hunt. Reason being, there’s not a lot of Mee Udang in KL and even if there are, the taste is just isn’t same and not up to expectations.

Mee-Seafood-Mee-Udang-Pak-Tam-Penang

Among the three that we tried, Pak Tam Mee Udang off a small Malay village in Teluk Kumbar gets our vote for being the best.

Teluk-Kumbar-Beach

Not only their seafood was the freshest, the dining setting at Pak Tam Mee Udang is unmatched too. Imagine being seated on the seaside with an unobstructed view of the Malacca Straits, accompanied by gentle ocean breeze and the sound of the waves crashing on the beach.

Pak-Tam-Mee-Udang-Penang-Beach

You get all of this while enjoying savory and spicy seafood noodles, how do you top that? Better still, the food is affordable and you are not charged with ridiculous tourist pricing.

Mee-Seafood-Pak-Tam-Penang

Since Pak Tam gets their seafood direct from the nearby fishermen at Sungai Batu, the prawns, squid and crabs served here are definitely fresher than what you get at the wet market.

Besides, they are perfectly cooked so they retain that delicious tender and succulent texture. The crab is so fresh, you can pull the flesh from the legs in one perfect piece, it just slides out effortlessly. So satisfying!

Pak-Tam-Mee-Udang-Mee-Seafood

If you are here, there’s no reason not to try both Mee Kuah and Mee Goreng. I would suggest ordering a Mee Seafood (with kuah) @ RM20 and Mee Udang Goreng @ RM10.

Pak-Tam-Mee-Seafood-Penang

The one with gravy has a spicy kick while the goreng version tastes slightly sweet, they are equally delicious.

With all things considered, I honestly think that Pak Tam Mee Udang is one of the best places to eat in Penang. They truly deserve it.
